One of the things I discovered a few years ago about learning to work with the Law of Attraction is that its simplicity can be deceiving when you’re first starting out.

I remember saying to my husband, “You know, people critical of these New Age-y concepts like to say things like, ‘Yeah, if it’s so easy, why isn’t everyone doing it?’ But keeping an eye on how you’re feeling, and trying to always make that choice to feel better isn’t really all that easy!”

I was right … and I was wrong, too.

Here’s what I’ve learned in the past few years about working with the Law of Attraction.

It Can Be Challenging in the Beginning

The Law of Attraction sounds simple, doesn’t it? Feel good, and good things will come to you. Feel bad, and you’ll attract things that you don’t want.

But what you need to remember is that, at the most basic level, you are working to change an old habit of thought into a new one. For most of us, reaching for the negative thought or feeling is a habitual thing - it’s something we’ve learned to do from an early age, so it’s usually well-entrenched.

Understanding that what you are doing initially is changing a deeply ingrained habit makes things a bit easier. I’ve always found that the 30 day approach is the key to developing and maintaining a new habit.

So try to give yourself at least 30 days to work at this. If midway through your 30 days you begin feeling down because “it’s not working”, hang in there. You just haven’t fully developed the new habit of being aware of how you’re feeling, and reaching for the better feeling thought when you find yourself in negative emotion.

It Definitely Gets Easier The More You Do It

It really does get easier. Once you’ve formed this new habit of thought, and begin practicing it regularly, you’ll find that you’ll naturally begin reaching for a better feeling thought most of the time.

The result? You’ll begin to feel better about your life. And while perhaps your conditions and your situations haven’t changed much, if at all, since you’re understanding that you have full control over how you feel, and you’re exercising that control positively, you WILL begin feeling better overall.

It’s a 24/7 Proposition

Realizing that working with the Law of Attraction is a 24/7 thing was my own personal wake-up call. I had been flirting with LOA for quite a few years leading up to this realization.

Here’s what I would do: I’d have a set of goals or desires, and spend lots of time focusing on them, visualizing them, scripting them, doing all the processes that I’d been reading up on. And then, that done, I’d go off and live my life, thinking and feeling reactively and passively, turning again and again to my old negative habits of thought. Even though I have always been an optimistic individual, I still had deeply entrenched habits of negative thought.

So basically, my life stayed the same. I was offering up a good feeling vibration some of the time, and cancelling it with a negative feeling vibration the rest of the time. And my desires were nowhere in sight.

But the key to working with the Law of Attraction is that feeling good attracts more things to you that make you feel good. It’s at work all the time. And while normally, through the course of a day, we tend to unconsciously offer up conflicting vibrations - sometimes feeling good, sometimes feeling bad - when you remember that it’s a full-time, all-the-time proposition, you’ll begin offsetting this balance, and tipping the scales toward feeling better.

And that’s when you’ll begin to see changes in your life.

Sometimes, When You “Get It”, Chaos Ensues

I find that this happens to me every time I reach a new level of understanding. I’ll have glorious, gorgeous days during which I’ll feel so connected, and then suddenly my feelings erupt into chaos.

The chaos is mostly internal. It’s like a wild rollercoaster ride of intense emotions, dipping and then soaring high.

Luckily, the first time this happened to me, a good friend of mine told me not to worry. This short period of intense, wildly up and down emotion, happens to a lot of people. You’re moving a lot of energy around in your life every time you experience a “breakthrough”. So don’t worry, and ride it out, knowing that this does sometimes happen, it’s actually a good sign, and you’ll soon get back to a more normal pattern of thoughts and feelings.

And Then There’s Resistance

So you’ve been feeling pretty good almost all the time. And when a negative feeling surfaces, you’re aware of it. But you’re not beating yourself up about it. You understand that it’s just part of your internal guidance system, telling you that the thoughts you’re having aren’t in alignment with all that you’re desiring. You calmly and easily get yourself back to feeling better, using one of the many tools and processes that you’ve learned.

And still, that big desire eludes you. It’s not showing up anywhere you can see.

What’s going on? Where’s your stuff? “This isn’t working!”

Chances are, you have resistance to your big desire that you might not even be aware of. The topic of resistance, and releasing resistance, is a big one. Resistance is simply a limiting belief that you have that blocks your alignment to your desire. So while you may be offering up some really good-feeling feelings about having your desire, at the same time, you might be sending out conflicting feelings, too.

You might not feel you have any limiting beliefs. But let’s take an example: say you want to be financially abundant. And you’re pretty sure you don’t have any limiting beliefs around being wealthy. But these things can be sneaky. There are a wide range of beliefs that people carry around about money, and often don’t even know about it. It could be something as simple as your parents always telling you, “money doesn’t grow on trees”, implying that it’s not a plentiful commodity. Or you might think there’s only so much of it to go around, and those who have lots have more than their fair share. Or you might simply not think you’re worthy of true wealth. These examples only touch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the range of limiting beliefs that are floating around about financial abundance.

So let’s say you discover you do have a limiting belief. What can you do? There are many effective techniques for releasing your resistance. Very briefly, the following methods and techniques have worked for me: the Sedona Method (I have both the book and the CD course), EFT, and many of the processes in the second half of Ask and It Is Given. I’ve found both EFT and the Abraham-Hicks processes to be the most effective for me personally. The Sedona Method is also very effective for eliminating stressful feelings.

Start With the Easy Things, and Build Up Your Confidence

I’ve written about this before: start with the easy things, the things around which you have no resistance whatsoever. Decide, for example, to form an intention to see butterflies (assuming your life doesn’t revolve around the beauty of butterflies!) and see what happens.

You CAN test these things out.

The Doubts Do Come

Finally, I find that I do still have days when old doubts surface. “Is this really working?” I’ll ask myself. “Am I just being too hopeful, wanting a quick fix?” But then I take a good look at my life, and I take a good look at how things worked before I even knew about the Law of Attraction, and I see lots of instances where “like attracts like” occurred throughout my life.

It does work. And yes, the doubts will probably keep coming back. In the end, there’s a lot of trust and faith tied up in all of this. But it’s a good ride. Just remember to have fun with it all, and you’ll be on the right track.
